Digital eye (1-English).

Previous post about Paper Camera has shown sample of pictures,it gave an idea how far the reality could be different from the human eyesight. I stated that the micro camera of a smartphone is not an option as before, it's an instrument that goes beyond the simple action of taking pictures.

Yes, it could interpret, understand the surrounding reality, adding more information than normal  human eye. It's like an other point of view beside the user.

Googles Google,this app dates back to october 2010, so some info might be redundant to many people. In the advertisement, the application would have been used in front of a famous monument, while shooting at the monument, the app would have "scanned"  the object, compared similar images,then offered possible solutions. In fact the only user action is pressing twice the button (taking a photo and confirm the selection).Next,all the powerful knowledge of google database would have been displayed on smartphone's screen.

I had the feeling of carrying more than an encyclopedia in my hand without the need of looking up to the index!

The process of "scanning" is called "image recognition" and is more sophisticated of scanning barcodes, more similar to "face recognition". As a matter of fact, reading barcodes for a computer, it's like typing on the keyboard, something very easy,smooth, because numbers are associated with the lines or bars.On the other hand, "reading" images makes the smartphone / device more similar to human, such as voice recognition.Complex algorithms.

Here some screenshoots; first I was in a computer shop and I intended to buy an hard disk so I used the app to find links and information about the product straight from the camera,without any browser or uploading photo.

Here last example of a successful research:

I was in a bookshop, then the app gave me all information of the book, author, also some links for buying, comparing prices, etc.This is a famous comic book, nearly art,great story, I recommend.

This app has considerably improved since August this year (2012),it is linked to other projects of Google to "metaverse virtual world" (Wikipedia, quoted) , "The Metaverse is our collective online shared space, created by the convergence of virtually enhanced physical reality and physically persistent virtual space,including the sum of all virtual worlds, augmented reality, and the internet."

Fascinating because we really do not know what kind of practical development in the near future will have this convergence of real world and "other worlds", how they will interact.

It would be more easy to understand the future through science fiction authors rather than scientist or technical journalists.

For example one step closer will be when pointing the camera at an object or a place, it will  trigger the smartphone/device to take some actions like switching on wi-fi or call a person.

Already the app "smartaction" (default on motorola) starts and takes actions triggered by GPS, wi-fi, time, but not with camera.

The question is: will it be more truthful and reliable the eye of the phone-camera or 

the human  one ?

It is not a stupid question, because the temptation to believe in, depending on computers-device, will lead these devices to a point where they will "judge" humans...

Does it sound familiar like "minority report" of Philip K. Dick?

Already some tests have the result given by computers (driving quiz).

Everyday when we go to the supermaket we accept the price and the grand total that the machine gives as result of scanning barcodes products  then we pay without discussions.Isn't true ?

If Metaverse is only an aid, a support to human knowledge and decisions, it can be partially controlled, otherwise we will be in a future humans governed by android machines.

Who will feed the database and collects information, will have the power and real control, as it as always happened in the past with managing news, information, knowledge.

Some goverments reducing investment in education and research have forsaken the future of their  people, such as it is happening in  Italy. Amusingly, a government of professors and scholars, rules at the present time.

Human eye. Occhio umano. (this in Italian) part 2.

Quattro persone sono in macchina e tornano dal lavoro. Questo è il colloquio di ciò che vedono
della stessa identica cosa:
C1: - Sono contento dello stipendio, finalmente non devo stare a sbattermi a cercare un altro lavoro, non vedo l'ora di firmare i documenti. In fondo fai una vita regolare, ti svegli presto, mangi ad orari regolari, vai a letto presto. Poi col tempo, migliorerà...- (il più giovane).
C2: - Si ! In confronto al lavoro precedente simile, l'altro corriere, c'era da impazzire, questo fai il tuo lavoro e poi vai a casa e non ci pensi più. Hai un posto fisso, poi continuo con i miei interessi.- (il penultimo anziano)
C3:- Anch'io non ne potevo più cercare di un lavoro, certo l'orario è assurdo, è lontano, ma... l'avevano detto che ci avrebbero fatto sentire i "chiodi", ma alla fine c'è sempre uno stipendio tutti i mesi.Finché non si trova di meglio, meglio restare.-(il secondo più giovane).
C4:-Non ne posso più, fa schifo! Non me ne frega niente dei soldi! Tutta la giornata impegnata e rovinata. Voglio solo sapere quando e quanti soldi  vogliono indietro, poi mi licenzio.Questo non è mai stato il mio lavoro.(il più vecchio).

N.B. C= collega, C4 non è da intendersi come esplosivo.

Come può un computer interpretare la stessa realtà vissuta da quattro individui/colleghi diversi ?

C1:entusiasta, fedele.(il più giovane)
C2:moderamente soddisfatto, fedele.(secondo in anzianità anagrafica)
C3:tollerante, incerto.(giovane)
C4:insoddisfatto,sovversivo.("il grande vecchio" una nota espressione)

Forse solo con schede e questionari psicologici il computer potrebbe identificare le personalità e interpretare la loro visione, ma il "digital eye" non troverebbe differenze ovvero il mero occhio elettronico fallirebbe di fronte alla visione fisica dei luoghi e delle attività.

Le schede di soddisfazione del cliente e del personale non sono fatte per quel che appaiono, ma sono uno strumento indiretto di controllo sofisticato, con molteplici questionari per individuare la veridicità delle affermazioni, il carattere, il comportamento e le vere aspirazioni del dipendente, incluso la "loyalty".Questi strumenti sono di uso comune nelle grandi aziende (meg@zienda inclusa) per gestire e raccogliere informazioni su grandi numeri di dipendenti.

Al termine del confronto tra il digital eye e human, c'è l'analisi psicologica di ciò che appare,non sembra al momento vi sia alcun software notevole, ma si chiede riscontro ai lettori che potranno sempre aggiungere commenti, suggerimenti, critiche (educate, niente riferimenti personali) al blog.

 
P.S. In chiusura stavo dimenticando di elencare cosa fà realmente l'app, la lista di funzioni (visibile da Play di google):
a) riconoscere monumenti, luoghi famosi b) leggere codici a barre e QR c) traduzioni di testi di lingua straniera d) aggiunta di contatti da biglietti da visita e da QR code in rubrica e) riconoscimento quadri, dvd, cd e immagini 2D f) risoluzione sudoku, poi ciò di cui si è parlato, ovvero riconoscimento immagine e informazioni sugli oggetti reali. Spero di non aver trascurato altre funzioni, ma nuove versioni faranno più cose.
